Gianfranco Pezzot
Neurosis and Calls MOCA London Web Exhibitions (March, 2022) presents Gianfranco Pezzot's two new series: Neurosis and Calls (extract). In the Neurosis series of monumental prints, Pezzot questions and explores linguistics, the deceit of language and the influence over human thinking, behaviours and obsessions. His photographic prints question and redefine the potential of the medium. The initial idea behind the works derived from the atmospheres of Cy Twombly’s work. In each piece there are inscriptions, with quotes from 'Nausea' by Jean-Paul Sartre, mark making and manipulation of the photographic medium. ''Although most of us claim that we personally do think, by all means we do not, we are guided by already existing external thoughts. The import is that language is perhaps the most important aspect of human nature. Therefore, through this critical engagement, I encourage all of us to separate consciously the tool of language from our essence and soul in order to get closer to spirituality and a possible real freedom of mind. Spirituality starts where words end. No possible escape from the misery of human condition until we get the consciousness of this game '' Gianfranco Pezzot. In Neurosis the harmony of colours, volumes and controlled ‘chaos’ convey an emotional tension and a poetic language. The series reminds us of the fundamental daily struggles, oppressions and frustrations related to human thinking: such as loss, trust, pain, death, violence and destiny. Calls is an audio installation of hundreds of daily phone calls between the artist and his partner. Each call was about 40 minutes and the installation consists of over 2 hours of recordings. This visceral relationship went on for about 6 months, but due to the Covid 19 lockdown and distance, evolved and ended almost entirely on the phone. The piece explores the relationship between intimacy and language and exposes the struggle between closeness and distance. Bio Gianfranco Pezzot (b. 1969, Italy lives and works in Pordenone, Italy) works with photography, videos, audio installations and sculpture. He attended a Drama Academy in Venice, Italy and later developed a practice of contemporary art. In his work Pezzot researches and explores philosophy, linguistics, the deceit of language on the perception of reality and the human condemnation of subjectivity. He is interested in the daily influences on human thinking, behaviours, obsessions and consequently, the awareness of what truth can be all about. He aims to push mediums to their furthest extent and explore the idea of new languages. His works have been exhibited around the world, are part of Museum and Gallery collections including the Museum of Photographic Art, Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts, Japan and have been presented at International Festivals, Bienniales and Art fairs. www.gianfrancopezzot.com @mocalondon_we |
