Phyllida Barlow - Deep (1991)

Phyllida Barlow - Deep (1991)

Phyllida Barlow decided to use the underground, basement location of Site 1 as the basis for her first of two installations for MOI. For Deep she constructed an installation that might be seen as either an underground cave or an under sea space. The daylight from the glass ceiling bricks in the street (seen at the top of the picture) added natural light to the cold artificial bulbs. The piece featured two large ‘reefs’ of white rectangular cardboard boxes that were all slightly filled with a cold grey paint, which spilled out onto their surface. A central wave structure formed from black refuse bags washed in between them. The work was a prime example of her practice of using rough or commercial materials made to be thrown away, and transforming them for a time, into something of wonder. After the exhibition all the materials were recycled.
