MOCA Movements 2026:
Roberto Ekholm & Cécile Emmanuelle Borra aka CUNTINA COUTURE
The World Was A Mess But His Hair Was Perfect, 2026

The dance film by Roberto Ekholm was created following a collaboration with artist Cécile Emmanuelle Borra aka CUNTINA COUTURE. Ekholm originally presented a live performance in dialogue with The World Was A Mess But His Hair Was Perfect, a site-specific mixed-media installation commissioned for Recreational Grounds in 2023.

Responding to the installation, Ekholm choreographed a performance that references constructions of male identity through stylised stereotypes and sculptural poses, including Rodin’s The Thinker. Filmed by Laura Bushell, the work moves between views of the installation, intimate details, and the space between performer and camera, shifting fluidly between performative moments and observational distance.

The installation featured a wallpaper printed with a repeated body-hair motif, overlaid with the slogan “THE WORLD WAS A MESS BUT HIS HAIR WAS PERFECT” across its centre. In front of it stood two male shop-mannequin legs wearing socks printed with the same motif, loosely and somewhat unconvincingly delineated a body shape.

Biography
Roberto Ekholm (b. 1976, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain) was raised in Gothenburg, Sweden, and lives and works in London. He studied dance at the Laban Centre and visual arts at Goldsmiths College. He is member of Royal Society of Sculpture and AICA UK (International Association of Art critics).

Ekholm’s multidisciplinary practice spans performance, movement, sculpture, and photography. Drawing on dance, visual art, and ideas of pseudo-science, fitness culture, and the body, his work explores identity, materiality, and body politics through repetition, minimal gesture, and performative abstraction.

Cécile Emmanuelle Borra aka CUNTINA COUTURE (b. 1966, Pau, France), is a London based multi-disciplinary artist. With a professional background in fashion and design, she has been a practicing artist since graduating from Goldsmiths College in 2004.

Continuing a longstanding representation of the male body as object of the female gaze from a feminist perspective, most of her art practice explores notions of desire and offers reflections on the manufacturing of desirable identities propelled by consumerism. Her work seeks to challenge patriarchal authority by presenting a satirical critique of its power dynamics.
