Lek #2 is a digital artwork conceived to be experienced online.
The image on screen is ambient light and wind playing on lengths of VHS tape. The VHS tapes were commercial editions of (Swedish) children’s films that had previously been released in cinemas. The transformation from second to third generation of the films is deliberately twisted by the artist working with the materiality of, rather than the content on, the video tapes.
The piece is a direct descendent of an earlier installation where visitors walked through a labyrinth of hanging video tape constructed in a building undergoing both restoration and modernisation.
Lek #2 is concerned with generations of material – specifically film, which has seen shifts from celluloid to video (amongst other physical and electronic formats) to digital within the artist’s lifetime.
